Ontario Catches Olympic Spirit McGuinty Government Invests In Athletes, Promotes Ontario

Ontario is joining with other provinces to help our athletes reach the podium at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

"Ontarians are proud Canadians, and we want to do our part to support our athletes and everyone who is working so hard to make these the best Games ever," said Premier McGuinty.

The government will invest $5 million to support Canadian athletes, promote Ontario and help welcome the world. Two top Ontario athletes, freestyle skier Veronica Brenner and snowboarder Katie Tsuyuki, joined Premier McGuinty for today's announcement.

"The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will give us an extraordinary opportunity to showcase Canada and Ontario to the world," said Tourism Minister Peter Fonseca.

Part of the funding will go towards the Own the Podium 2010 program, which helps Canada's athletes compete and win. Ontario artists and performers will also take part in the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad.

Nearly 7,000 athletes and officials from more than 80 countries are expected to participate in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Canada's goal is to finish first in medals won and rank among the top three nations in the gold medal standings.
