June is Seniors' Month Ontario’s seniors worked hard to build a province that we could all be proud of. That’s why the McGuinty government is taking strong action to give our seniors the supports they need to enjoy their golden years with dignity and grace.

It’s why we have introduced our Family Caregiver Leave to would give hard working Ontarians up to eight weeks of unpaid, job-protected time leave to care for our seriously ill and injured loved ones. This legislation was something caregivers have been asking for and our government felt so strongly about that we included it in our election platform. The Family Caregiver Leave is a matter of compassion and we believe is the right thing to do for Ontario seniors.

Our government also introduced a Wandering Prevention program, the first of its kind in Canada, to help quickly find seniors with Alzheimer's and other cognitive impairments when they are missing. The program will establish a standard province-wide model that communities can use to alert the public when vulnerable seniors go missing and may be in danger.

The safety and well-being of seniors living in retirement homes is also a top priority for our government. That’s why we created the Retirement Homes Act, which will protect seniors living in retirement homes and ensure families have peace of mind that their loved ones are able to live with dignity and respect. Under the new legislation, all retirement homes must be licenced and post a Residents' Bill of Rights; protecting residents from abuse and neglect and requiring staff training on abuse, fire prevention and safety and whistle blowing protections.

And for seniors living at home, our government has introduced the Healthy Homes Renovation Tax Credit, which would be a new permanent, refundable Personal Income Tax credit to help with renovations that allows our seniors to stay in their home longer. The credit would be worth up to $1,500 each year, calculated as 15 per cent of up to $10,000 in eligible home renovation expenses. It could be claimed by senior homeowners and tenants, and people who share a home with a senior relative.

Our seniors have worked hard all their lives to make Ontario the great place it is today. The McGuinty government is working hard to ensure that our seniors are treated with the dignity and respect they have earned.
